Case Study: Website Development for L’Immigration Francophone au Canada
The website for L’Immigration Francophone au Canada is a national website designed to provide information for refugees and immigrants to Canada. Our web design team at Creative Coco’Nuts developed an interactive, illustrated map of Canada that provides both user-friendly access and eye-catching design. Additionally, clicking on the different provinces and territories will take users to a separate page with more information about that particular province/territory.
The whimsical illustrations that accompany each province and territory on the map give users an immediate sense of the landscape and resources that are common in those areas. The design also captures attention and draws focus to areas where users can find more information.
The website is currently available in five languages: French, English, Persian, Russian, and Ukrainian, and it continues to grow to accommodate additional languages.
There’s also a specific mobile version of the website that allows the map to be fully responsive on all devices.
Webpages for Canadian provinces and territories
Once users click on a province or territory, they have access to a wealth of information.
The webpages start with a brief overview of the province/territory and provide information about the Francophone populations in that area. Our team designed a tally that shows the number of people who have knowledge of French, and the number of people who have French as their first language. The tally scrolls up from zero before landing on the final number, and the overall effect is fun and informative.
Additionally, users can find information about “Life in French,” “Immigration,” “What to Expect,” and a “Read More” section.
“Life in French” is broken up into several easy-to-see sections: education, health, and economy and employment. These sections provide information about where to access French schooling, daycare services, health centres, community centres, and employment. There are helpful links attached to the page that users can click on to be taken to the homepage of French schools, daycares, and health centres, just to name a few.
The “Immigration” section offers a breakdown of need-to-know information for Canadian newcomers, including a section on employment, settlement services (with links to website with even more information), and information about communities that are part of the Welcoming Francophone Community project.
The “What to Expect” section features graphics that detail the average temperatures experienced in each province/territory, a section on the geography of the province/territory, and a section that explains the how many airports or other access points a province/territory has.
The “Read More” section has additional information about Francophone history in the province/territory and interesting facts.
While this is a lot of information, our web design team organized it in a way that makes it easy to read and engaging. The content is easily searchable, SEO optimized, and accessible for Canadian newcomers.
Branding
Our team used the colours present in the L’Immigration Francophone au Canada logo to create cohesive branding across the site. Dark navy blue and turquoise, with pops of pink in photographs throughout, creates a modern, vibrant feel.
The design as a whole is also designed to be welcoming and comforting to refugees and immigrants who are using the website. It may be one of their first introductions to Canada, and we took that responsibility seriously. The easy-to-use format and open design reflects that responsibility of warmly welcoming newcomers.
General site goals
User experience, a welcoming and easy-to-use website, and interactive website development were all important for this project. Additionally, it was important to create engaging graphics and illustrations for the map, since that is the first point of reference for users.
Inclusivity was another major goal of the website, and this was achieved both through different language options and by breaking down information in accessible chunks.
But the most important goal was to create an engaging, welcoming, and helpful resource for Canadian newcomers, and that is exactly what our website programming team was able to deliver.
