How to Add New Users to a WordPress Blog
There are always little adjustments you can make to your WordPress blog, and one of those is adding new users to the site.
There are a few different ways to add new users to your WordPress site, but don’t worry. It’s not very difficult!
Keep reading for an easy, step-by-step guide to adding new users to your WordPress site.
Why should you add users to your website?
It’s helpful to add users to your website for a few reasons.
First of all, it lets people subscribe to your website and it lets them stay up to date with the details of your organization.
Adding users to your website also lets you delegate administrative tasks to others in your business. You can give others access so they can update, edit, and post things on the website, which lessons your workload.
Different types of WordPress site users
There are five different types of WordPress users: subscribers, contributors, authors, editors, and administrators.
Subscribers have the least amount of power on the website. They can create a profile that lets them leave comments more easily, or they can login to their profile to access subscriber-only content, but they can’t post or delete things from the site.
Contributors have a bit more power. They can create and edit their own posts on the website, but they can’t publish these. They also don’t have access to other people’s posts, settings, or tools.
Authors can create and publish their own posts, but not the posts of others. They also don’t have access to additional features like plugins, settings, and themes.
Editors can create posts, publish, and edit their own posts as well as posts from other users. They can also delete their own posts and other users’ posts. They don’t have access to website settings, though.
Administrators have access to everything on a WordPress site, including website settings. They can add plugins, remove users and content, and more. Make sure you fully trust someone if you give them administrator access because they will have free reign of your website.
How to add users to your site
Manually adding users to your site
If you have a small number of users you want to add to your site, it’s easiest to do this manually.
This method is perfect for small organizations or businesses who have a few different authors who regularly add to the website. It’s also great for organizations that have volunteers who update the website.
Or, if several different authors are writing a blog together, adding the authors in manually is also the best option.
Click “Users” in the admin area of WordPress and then navigate to “Add New.”
Once you’re there, fill out the form to add a new user to the site. You’ll need to create a username for the new user, which is difficult to change later. The user can later use their username or email to log in to the site.
Then, enter their email. There are several optional fields below that you or the user can complete.
After this, you’ll need to create a password for the user. You can use a password generator to do this.
Lastly, at the bottom of the page, you can choose what role to give the user on your site. The dropdown menu presents a variety of options, including author, editor, administrator, subscriber, and contributor.
These roles come with different levels of editing ability on your site. Subscribers have the least amount of authority on your site while administrators have the most power.
Select what role you want to give the new user and then you’re all set. Click the “Add New User” button to complete their user profile.
Allow anyone to register
You can let users register on your site without having to manually input all of them. This is important if you have many users.
Navigate to settings in the admin panel and then go to “General.” Check off the box “Anyone can register.”
This will give users subscription level authority on your site. But you can change this to contributor if you wish. Your site might run into problems if you give all users authority above contributor level, however.
You’ll need to add a login feature on your site for this to work, and there are various plugins you can download to accomplish this.
