Important Things To Add To Your WordPress Footer
The footer of your website can be easily overlooked, but if you put the right things in your footer, it can increase the engagement of people who view your website and improve their overall experience on your site.
So what should you include in your website footer?
Keep reading to find out!
First of all, what is a WordPress footer?
The footer of your WordPress site is the bottom section of your website that appears on every page after the main content.
Many websites include links in their footers, but there are many additional options.
For beginners, it can be hard to know where to start, so here are some helpful options to keep in mind when you’re fleshing out your WordPress footer.
What to include in your WordPress footer
Links
Most websites include links in their footers that connect to additional pages of their website. Often, there will be links to their about us section, contact information, or home page. Links to other parts of their website are also possible.
To add links to your WordPress footer, click on the “Appearance” tab, and navigate to “Menus.” From there, click on “Create new menu.” Then, enter a name (most likely “Footer Menu”) into the space called “Menu name.”
From there, you can select the items you want to include on the menu. These will be sections of your website, like the home page, about us page, shop page, etc. Click “add to menu” when you’re happy with your selections, remember to save your changes.
To display your menu in the WordPress footer, click on “Appearance” and then “Widgets.” From there, you can add the menu widget into your footer sidebar. Make sure to save your progress.
Privacy policy
Every website needs to have a privacy policy, and footers are a great spot to put privacy policies.
First, create your privacy policy. WordPress has a drafted privacy policy already in place. Navigate to “Settings” and then “Privacy” to access it. Here, you can decide to use the drafted privacy policy or create a brand new one.
Once you’ve created your privacy policy, you can go ahead and add it in your footer.
Link to social media
Your WordPress footer is a great place to display your latest Instagram posts. And, it’s a great way to quickly connect your website traffic to your social media.
First, you’ll need to download an Instagram plugin for your WordPress site. Some options include Smash Balloon Instagram Feed Plugin and Smash Balloon Social Wall.
Then, connect your Instagram page to your website. Navigate to “Instagram Feed” and then “Settings.” Click “connect an Instagram account.” Once you have everything connected, you can add your Instagram feed into your footer.
Navigate to “Appearance” and then “Widgets” and from there, you can add the widget into your footer. Easy!
Copyright date
If you want to add the copyright date of your website in your footer, you can easily do this by adding the date to your theme settings.
Navigate to “Appearance” and then “Customize.” Type “© Copyright 2016-2021. All rights reserved.” into the text box and save your changes. Publish your theme changes to your site, and your copyright date will show up in your WordPress footer!
Remember, your copyright date will not update every year. You will need to manually change it.
There are countless other things you can put in your footer: buttons that link to your social media, code, and contact information — just to name a few more examples.
